Time after time I would go to the same spot and wait for her. Her stays were always fleeting, only to disappear as quickly as she’d come. Not knowing when she would appear made it difficult, trying to guess when, or even if it would happen.
Once, as I was about to leave, I saw the light from the corner of my eye. Staring at it until she appeared, I noted that she looked a little older. Had it been that long since her last appearance? Her face was changing and her auburn hair was longer. But the connection I felt was still there, even after time had passed. It wasn’t just because she was the first one I’d seen there. There were many wanderers passing by, just like Davin had said there would be, but something was different about her. She was the only one that appeared with the light, and to top that off, she was aging, like humans did.
“There you are.”
Davin’s words made me jump. Too engrossed in watching the girl, I hadn’t sensed his arrival. “Stop following me,” I said. Surprisingly, my tone was gentle.
“Whoooa, that’s not the same girl, is it? I mean, it looks like her, but older. How’s that possible? Unless…she is a real human.” Davin’s tone faded, seemingly thinking the same thoughts as me. “Strange.”
Davin and I both held our breath when she came closer. This time she tried to push through the grass, but to no avail and shortly after, she started to fade. Davin and I finally snapped out of it and looked at each other.
“Don’t tell anyone,” I said in a hurry.
“Why?”
“Because I said so,” I said sternly.
“That’s not nice.” He crossed his arms, frowning.
“Okay”—I changed my tone—“please don’t say anything to anyone.”
“Why?”
I counted to five in my head to calm my nerves. “Listen, I think she’s…different. I think it’s best we just let her be. She’s here for a reason.”
“Yeah, for your entertainment. I see the way you look at her.”
“That’s not the reason. Stop thinking perverted thoughts,” I snapped.
“You’re not nice again.”
“You’re not making this easy. Please, just trust me and do as I ask.”
“Okay, since you asked nicely. And I do trust you.”
I didn’t know why, but his words tugged at my heart in a good way, and the irritation that had consumed me disappeared. “Let’s go back,” I said. Then we flew across the breathtaking clouds.
